Ghost in the MachineCirca 1880: A female spirit floating over a lake.

Since the early days of photography, artists have sought to capture what can’t be seen. In the 19th century, spirit photographers pushed the limits of daguerreotype, stereoscopy, and exposure to create a window into the spirit realm. Some were seekers: hoping to encounter ghosts in liminal spaces. Some were storytellers: recreating nightmare, memory, and myth. Some were performers: creating a bridge between worlds. Every spirit photograph holds up a mirror to our biases about the supernatural, and provides a window into the power of imagination.
Believing is seeing.
